How to Create a Relaxing Outdoor Deck

Nearly every backyard outdoor space is a delight during morning coffee breaks, backyard barbecues, and stargazing under the night sky, but some patios, decks, and porches are simply irresistible! What turns a nice outdoor space into an amazing outdoor space? To figure out how to get the most out of our next outdoor decorating project, we took a closer look at one of our favorite outdoor spaces.

Our Medusa Atlantis rug creates a stylish foundation that adds comfort and a beautiful visual component to Donice’s backyard deck.

Home decorating enthusiast Donice Moreau of @donice.designs on Instagram recently completed an outdoor seating space on her deck, and we think the results look super-inviting and stylish. Between the dreamy canopy, warm lighting, cozy couches, and of course, our Medusa Atlantis rug, the space perfectly balances style and function for an open-air seating area.

With a little research and advice from Donice, we’ve learned that there are three main steps to creating an incredible outdoor space in your backyard.

Plan a look: colors, themes & materials

Elevated neutrals of beige, deep brown, and charcoal with pops of green foliage and white accents create a bold, sophisticated look.
Elevated neutrals of beige, deep brown, and charcoal with pops of green foliage and white accents create a bold, sophisticated look.

The first step is to create a plan. Whether you’re starting your outdoor space from scratch or fixing up your existing space, having a vision is helpful, so you can picture your ideal look. Donice says, “When creating the look for my outdoor space, my main focus was cozy and chic. I wanted the space to be inviting, capture attention, and look fresh!” Knowing what you like and what you want your space to look like will help you style an outdoor space that looks cohesive.

A great place to start is by choosing colors, themes, and materials. Ask yourself questions like complementary or classic style? Warm or cool colors? Bold or subtle patterns? Modern décor or coastal décor? Donice’s outdoor deck balances cozy and chic with a combination of warm colors and stylish design accents.

Cultivate comfort and function

Ample seating, cozy cushions, and a central coffee table create a comfortable space for lounging, and the canopy provides shade for relaxing, even on hot, sunny days.

Once you have a vision for your ideal outdoor space, the next step is to select your furnishings, beginning with large items, like seating, rugs, and tables. Think function and comfort. Consider the activities you would like to do in the space and how much seating you will need.

“What I love most about my outdoor space,” Donice says, “is the comfort and coziness my friends and family feel when we’re out there. The Atlantis rug definitely plays a huge role in the overall cozy feel of the space.” For families with pets and young children, room to move and materials that are easy to clean might be your priority. If you plan on using the space for hosting large gatherings, you may want to maximize seating.

When you search for the pieces you need to create your outdoor space, keep in mind the style you envisioned during the planning phase. In addition to size, comfort, and function, look for colors, materials, and décor styles that fit the look.

Find your finishing touches

Finally, you’ve secured the large furniture pieces. Next, finish the look with accents and décor. Flameless pillar candles, throw pillows, string lights, potted plants (real or faux!), vases, and a patterned rug will add style and personality to outdoor spaces. “I chose the Atlantis rug because of its striking and modern pattern,” says Donice. “I knew it would tie everything together and complete the cozy chic vibe I was going for.” Layering in decorative details will bring your space to life and make it feel more inviting. Have fun with it!
